FAQ
FAQs
What are the walks like?
Essex is largely a flat county so the walking is fairly easy - however, some walks are fairly long, so if you’re new to walking you may want to start with a leisurely walk. Each of the walks is graded and this is shown on the programme. If in any doubt about a particular walk, email the leader with your queries.
What should I wear?
You must come properly equipped. Boots or walking shoes are recommended as the ground can be rough or muddy, even in summer. You’ll also need waterproof clothing unless there is no chance of rain.
What about lunch?
On full-day walks we stop for lunch, so please bring a packed lunch. Occasionally there will be a pub stop in the middle of the walk, although this is usually reserved as a treat for the end of the walk. In addition, it’s essential to bring a drink on all walks.
Can I just turn up?
There’s no need to contact the walk leader beforehand unless the walk description asks you to book in advance. It can be beneficial just to let the walk leader know you are intending to turn up in case of any enforced last-minute changes. It also gives the leader an idea in advance of rough numbers. Try to arrive at the meeting point at least five minutes before the advertised start time.
Are dogs allowed?
Dogs are allowed subject to the walk leader’s discretion, but they must be well-behaved and on a lead, as we often encounter farm animals. They must also be able to negotiate stiles and other obstacles! The dog owner must accept full responsibility for controlling their dog at all times.
How do I get to the walk?
Options for public transport may be available for many of our walks - however, a significant number may not be convenient unless by car. If this is a problem for a walk, use Facebook to see if someone is willing to lift-share / share the petrol.
What happens at the social meets?
Our social meets are just informal get-togethers, held occasionally for those members who wish to catch up outside of walking. Members are able to make suggestions on what to do and where to go should they wish to host.
What are the benefits of joining?
By joining the group, you will automatically get updates on what is going on within the group, details of any programme changes or last-minute notices. You will also be able to join in on any other group’s walks if you are interested. In addition, the membership goes towards supporting the Ramblers in their work to ensure the countryside is kept open for all. The Ramblers spend a lot of their time making sure that long-distance footpaths are recognised, ensuring access to the countryside, and clearing footpaths for us and future generations. Details of the work Ramblers head office does on our behalf can be found on the Main Ramblers website.
An additional benefit is that some outdoor shops and other organisations give discounts to Ramblers members.
Can I help with organising?
The group is run entirely by volunteers, so we’re always keen to hear from people who would like to help out! We need people to lead walks, host socials, and take on roles on the committee. We try to ensure that an experienced leader accompanies anyone leading a walk for the first time. If you’re interested in helping, please contact the appropriate committee member. For insurance reasons, all walk leaders must be members of the Ramblers.
